From the pageantry of the garden club to the performance art of everyday domestic life, Mary Ryan both celebrates and mocks the cultural carnival of the South through her caricatures of Southern women. In her “Weird Daughters” series, Mary Ryan honors the Taffeta Chiffons of the world—that is, girls who would rather be weird than boring—and the mothers who love and raise them. A weird daughter herself, Mary Ryan takes great joy in singing the praises of the outliers, the deviants, and the squeaky wheels who make life colorful. Mary Ryan first began performing standup comedy in 2022, after an experience with postpartum depression led her to seek a creative outlet. Since the beginning of her unlikely comedy career, Mary Ryan has sold out at clubs and venues across the country, co-headlined the wildly successful Southern Nights comedy tour with author and comedian Landon Bryant, shot a Dry Bar comedy special, acted in a Southern Living limited series, and opened for nationally acclaimed comedians like Ryan Hamilton, Heather McMahan, and more.
